When I first heard about comedian Kevin “Bloody” Wilson in early August and his interesting career as a comedian and singer, I knew then that I had to see him perform on stage! I received some promotional material ahead of his tour to SA, which is currently still underway, and when I saw what this potty-mouthed, yet hilariously funny Australian star had to offer, I knew I was in for a fun ride.
So who is Kevin “Bloody” Wilson you may ask? He’s gained international fame for his explicit comedy work around the globe. In fact, one of his biggest fans is none other than World No.1 golfer Tiger Woods. Due to his explicitly crude comedy and humour, he hasn’t been featured much in the media, and has managed to grab the attention of fans from around the world with very little press and media exposure.
Bloody, who’s in SA as part of his Excess All Areas World Tour, has already visited Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, Pietermaritzburg and Port Elizabeth. Further stops on the tour include parts of East London and Nelspruit.
A cult star in S.A for over 25 years, Kevin’s earthy lyrics and unashamedly blokey songs might have been banned by straight-laced South African broadcast censors, but that didn’t stop them spreading like wildfire on countless illegally-copied cassettes!
With Jenny Talia and my friend Domenico Deidda
Thanks to this Aussie's original irrepressibly cheeky songs, a generation grew up knowing how to berate Santa Claus for delivering substandard Christmas presents, or how to ask a girl the important questions, like if her dad owns a brewery and if she’s, er... fun on first dates. Needless to say, these aren’t the words he uses – in fact, it's best that easily-offended types are warned about Kevin’s language well in advance.
I managed to meet Kevin last week in Cape Town, literally moments before he went on stage. I was escorted backstage with my friend Domenico Deidda, where we had the opportunity to meet up with Kevin and for me to get a signed photo as well.
While doing this, I was blessed to have met his fabulously funny daughter, Jenny Talia (who uses the tagline: Jenny Talia from Australia), who clearly seemed to have inherited the comedic genes from her talented father. While Kevin and his wife Betty live in Australia, Jenny’s happily married to an American, and she now lives in Chicago.
Jenny is the opening act on this tour, only her second visit to SA. With very few female comedians around in the business, you have to be very talented to win over the male audience – many of whom make up Kevin’s fan base. But she does it effortlessly, targeting both men and women in her comedy – which had the crowd laughing out loud.
She’s sharp, witty and would make a great companion or guest at any dinner table, but as long as it’s clearly only during adult conversation. She gets to speak the things that many of us think about but wish we could say out loud.
Whether it’s talking about men who are bastards or how guys react on a first date, her subject matter will have you in stitches.
Kevin, a veteran in this business, clearly has a following in S.A and it's evident the moment he steps out on stage that all of his fans know his songs and humour. I was impressed by just how much attention and fame he’s developed over 25 years and how S.A fans have taken to him – considering he has not had much publicity here before.

While chatting to him backstage and getting my autograph, he had only complimentary things to say about SA, and told me he’s always loved being here. Working with Kevin must be fun as he gets to travel with his family.
Daughter Jenny stars in his show, and wife Betty mans the merchandise table at the show. It’s a family affair that works incredibly well that even has many female fans taking off their tops wanting him to sign various body parts. Think of it as the Woodstock 1969 era reincarnated!
The show is a must see for fans who have a taste for funny, laugh-out-loud explicit and crass humour and who will appreciate the comedy he has to offer!
